Making someone special
Winter is finally here, and these
days have been freezing cold. Yesterday afternoon was Iñaki's Christmas
Production, so we all headed together to school on our bikes. Half way I had to
use my breaks, but they didn't work properly. I kept riding really
slowly because I could not fix the problem in that moment. We enjoyed the
presentation and came back home, still having problems with my breaks. So, this
morning I took my bike to the "bike doctor", a monthly service free
of charge for University students and staff. I got there at 9.30, the lake was
frozen and the grass was white with ice. The wind was so chilli I had to cover
my mouth. The two guys setting the tables and tools were shivering, "we're
starting at 10 AM"... the oldest of them told a few of us who were waiting
in line... 30 minutes is a long time when you're outdoors at -3° C. Finally
they started registering bikes, I was second in line, so when my turn came I
told the youngest of them, "I've been wondering how you're going to work
this morning with this freezing weather" (as he was rubbing his hands,
trying to keep them warm) ... "We'll manage", he said... and I said
"I thought you would have an outdoors heater or something like
that"... and he replied with a smile "we're not that important".
So they finished taking notes on the problems with my breaks, stapled the note
on my bike and I left on Ru's bakfiets (my personal taxi). When we got home I
told Ru, I think we should make some hot cocoa for the bike doctor´s boys. Ru
agreed with the idea, so after having breakfast I made some Mexican style hot
cocoa (using chocolate tablets of a Mexican brand, and some extra cinnamon).
After breakfast, Ru went back to the University and took two mugs and the hot
cocoa in a thermo flask. A couple of hours later, I went to collect my bike. As
soon as I got there, the youngest of the boys welcomed me with a smile, I
walked towards my bike and checked the list of repairs they had made, both boys
were busy with other clients, so I said nothing and sat Iker on the saddle.
When they saw me, one of them came and said “thank you so much, it was really thoughtful of you”… and the youngest of them said “you made my day”. Then they
asked me for the ingredients, it was quite “exotic” for them and they both said
they had enjoyed it a lot… I felt superb happy, they made my day too, I thanked
them for fixing my bike and before leaving I told them: “you see, you are really
special and important indeed”.
