The Blue Dress

Sunday, 9 AM. The little 3-year-old comes to his parents room saying "mom, I'm thirsty, I'm thirsty"... Mom wanted to sleep a bit more, but all the same she knew he wouldn't leave if she asked him to, so against her will she got up and headed to the kitchen. In zombie mode she made chocolate milk and a toast. As she was already awake and in the kitchen, she decided to make coffee and have a toast with butter too. The boy kept going on telling her stories about monsters, and plans for playing, and telling her how to eat her toast "mom, you have to bite it this way". She was so tired she then walked to the living room and lay back on the sofa... "no mommy, it's not for sleeping, it's for watching TV". So, still in zombie mode, mom sat down and stared at a point on the wall. Then the little one said "come with me"... "where?" mom asked... "to the kitchen, mom", he said, so she followed him. Mom keeps telling her kids to wear their slippers when they enter the kitchen, the floor is so cold they could easily get sick if the go barefoot in there. The little one took off one of his slippers and mom said "if you take them off I'm leaving". The boy took the other one off and that was the perfect excuse for mom to leave, head to the sofa and lie there again. The boy stayed in the kitchen for a while, then joined mom in the other sofa. She pretended she was asleep and he didn't bother her for a few minutes. Then "stomp, stomp, stomp"."Good morning Iñaki", the little boy said. "Good morning Iker", his big brother replied. "Mommy is sleeping, don't make a noise", the little one said, but the big brother went straight to poke his mom saying "mom, mom, look... (showing her a plaster she had put on his hand the night before) it doesn't hurt me anymore, and I can move my hand perfectly, I'm cured!" "Fantastic!", mom said in her most enthusiastic zombie mode voice. She stood up and hugged her boy, kissed him on his forehead and headed to the kitchen to make more chocolate milk and a toast with Nutela (his favourite). That's it... no more sleeping chances for mom. So she decided not to fight against it, but to flow with it. Time to take a shower...but before that, she set the washing machine, put away the dry laundry, made the kids bed and left them ready to play while she took her shower so they wouldn't disturb dad, who was still sound asleep. In the shower she went and a minute later her kids were fighting over a silly argument, perhaps both of them wanted to play with the dragon, or both of them wanted to be "red power ranger". There was not much she could do... soon she heard dad saying "it's Ok, they're just playing". Fine, dad is in charge. After her shower, time to get dressed. It's Sunday, it's cold, no plans to go out,  a good day to stay home and relax. She opened the wardrobe door and saw that nice blue dress she loves and never wears because she never finds an occasion for it. Without thinking it twice, she grabbed the dress, it was like an impulse. She put it on (with a black thermal blouse, it's quite chilli today) and headed back to where her kids were. She entered the room, dad was again back to sleep. As soon as she walked in her kids welcomed her with those big round eyes and her big boy said "nice dress, you look like a woman!"... and the little one said with his sweetest voice "mommy!" And that's all it took to make that day a special day for her. She is still sleepy, her eyes itchy and in need for some more sleep, but she feels like a million dollar because her boys made her day with those sweet words. She brushed her hair, put on some make up and smiled while she was watching her kids play. Dad woke up, saw her, raised his eyebrows and said "wow". She will probably stay home, cook lunch and dinner, play knights and dragons, wearing that pretty blue dress she loves because it makes her feel special.
